Earlier in 2024, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) awarded a substantial grant to the Rappahannock Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. The $5.1 million EDA grant lays the groundwork for the construction of a Health Science building on RCC’s Warsaw campus.

Since the announcement of the grant award numerous donors and foundations have pledged financial support for the project that requires at least an additional $1.3 million in contributions from other sources. The financial support demonstrates a collaborative effort to enhance the region's educational and training landscape.

Among the notable local foundations supporting the building project is the George W. Verlander and Cornelia M. Verlander Memorial Foundation that has committed $500,000 for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography suite.

Most recently, the Cabell Foundation in Richmond issued a 1:1 challenge grant of $200,000 for which the RCC Educational Foundation is actively seeking donations. Naming opportunities for the building, instructional and meeting spaces remain available, as well as other donating opportunities. RCC’s goal is to break ground in summer 2025.

The new Health Science building marks the first major instructional construction project on campus in over 45 years. This cutting-edge facility will feature simulation labs, classrooms, student study rooms, and administrative offices dedicated to nursing, EMS, diagnostic medical sonography, and other health science programs. By addressing existing space limitations that hinder program enrollment, the new facility will play a pivotal role in recruiting, training, and retaining healthcare professionals, creating vital pathways for ongoing educational opportunities.

Dr. Shannon Kennedy, President of RCC, expressed her excitement about the transformative impact of the grant and subsequent financial support, stating, "We are honored to receive these grants and donations. They reflect the community’s confidence in our programs and commitment to growth."

RCC plays a vital role in shaping the healthcare workforce in the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck regions. With a proven track record of success in producing skilled graduates and high licensure examination pass rates, the college is poised to enhance its impact on the healthcare sector through strategic partnerships and innovative programming.
